Preparing for Your Pedicure
Before you start your at-home pedicure, ensure you have all the necessary tools. Having everything ready will make the process smoother and more pleasant.
Gather all your Bare Feet & Hands essential items such as nail clippers, a foot file, and a nail file. You’ll also need a foot soak, moisturizer, and your favorite nail polish.
Here’s a brief list of what you’ll need:
- Nail clippers
- Pumice stone or foot file
- Cuticle pusher
- Buffer
- Moisturizer
- Nail polish (base coat, color, and topcoat)
Once you have your tools, set up your space for the pedicure. Find a comfortable area with good lighting and space to move around.
A sturdy chair and a small table for your supplies can create the perfect setup. Consider placing a towel on the floor for any accidental spills or debris.
Ambiance is also important, think about playing calming music or lighting a scented candle to create a relaxing spa-like atmosphere.
Removing Old Nail Polish
Begin by removing any old nail polish from your toenails to ensure a clean base for new polish. Use a gentle, acetone-free nail polish remover to avoid drying out your nails.
Soak a cotton pad with the remover and press it onto the nail for a few seconds. This will help dissolve the polish for easier removal. Once the polish is gone, rinse your feet to remove any residue.
After trimming and shaping your toenails, it’s important to keep them healthy and well-maintained. Here are a few additional tips:
- Regularly moisturize your toenails and cuticles to prevent dryness and cracking.
- Avoid wearing tight shoes that can squeeze your toes and put pressure on your nails.
- If you notice any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pain, consult a healthcare professional.
- Consider using a toenail conditioner or strengthener to keep your nails strong and prevent breakage.
By following these tips and techniques for trimming and shaping your toenails, you can maintain healthy and attractive nails.
After soaking your feet, use a pumice stone or foot scrub to gently exfoliate any rough or dry skin. This will leave your feet feeling soft and smooth.
Once you have exfoliated, push back your cuticles and trim any excess skin around your nails. This will give your feet a neat and polished look.
Finish off your foot soak by applying a rich foot cream or lotion to moisturize and nourish your skin. Massage the cream into your feet, focusing on any dry or cracked areas.
For an extra treat, consider adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the cream for a luxurious touch. Lavender, peppermint, or tea tree oil are all great options for soothing and refreshing tired feet.
Make foot soaking a regular part of your self-care routine to keep your feet looking and feeling their best. Your feet work hard for you every day, so give them the pampering they deserve!
After exfoliating, it’s important to moisturize your feet to keep them smooth and hydrated. Apply a thick foot cream or moisturizer and wear socks overnight to lock in moisture.
In addition to exfoliation and moisturizing, it’s important to wear comfortable shoes that provide proper support to prevent rough skin and calluses from forming. Consider using shoe inserts or orthotic devices if necessary.
Regular pedicures can also help keep your feet looking and feeling their best. Treat yourself to a professional pedicure occasionally to maintain healthy, beautiful feet.
Cuticle Care: A Delicate Process
After the soak, carefully push back cuticles while they are softer. Avoid cutting unless necessary to prevent irritation or infection. Apply cuticle serum for nourishment and protection.
Maintaining healthy, soft cuticles leads to stronger, more beautiful nails. Gentle cuticle care is essential for nail health and appearance.
It is important to remember that cuticles act as a protective barrier for our nails, so it is best to avoid cutting them too often. Instead, opt for gently pushing them back to maintain their health and appearance.
In addition to using cuticle serum, consider incorporating cuticle oil into your nail care routine. Cuticle oil helps to moisturize and hydrate the cuticles, keeping them soft and supple.
Remember to be gentle when caring for your cuticles, as they are delicate and can easily become damaged if treated roughly. By following a regular cuticle care routine, you can ensure that your nails stay strong and healthy.
Moisturizing and Massaging Your Feet
Moisturize your feet after exfoliation and cuticle care with a hydrating cream or lotion. Massage in circular motions, focusing on heels and rough areas.
Applying additional pressure on tense spots reduces tension and leaves your feet relaxed and rejuvenated. Adding essential oils can enhance relaxation and invigorate tired feet.
Applying Nail Polish Like a Pro
Applying nail polish enhances the beauty of your feet. Start with a base coat, followed by color and a topcoat for protection and shine.
Base Coat Application
A high-quality base coat protects nails from staining and improves polish adhesion. Apply a thin layer and wait before applying color.
Color Coat Techniques
Choose a color that matches your style and mood, applying two thin layers for an even finish. Seal with a topcoat for added shine and protection.
Top Coat for the Perfect Finish
Allow each layer to dry completely to avoid smudging and maintain a polished appearance. Protect your pedicure by letting it dry naturally for about 30 minutes.
Drying Time and Aftercare
Proper drying is crucial, allow nails enough time to dry completely. Avoid wearing socks or shoes until your nails are fully set to prevent smudging.
Maintain your pedicure with regular aftercare, applying cuticle oil to keep nails and skin hydrated and healthy.
Additionally, it’s recommended to avoid exposing your nails to hot water or harsh chemicals immediately after getting a pedicure to ensure longevity. Consider wearing gloves while cleaning or doing dishes to protect your nail polish.
Pedicure Maintenance and Tips
Maintain your pedicure with daily practices such as keeping your feet clean and moisturized. Reapply a topcoat every few days to maintain color and shine.
Regularly check your feet for wear or chipped polish, addressing them promptly. Properly storing your pedicure tools maintains hygiene and prolongs their lifespan.

Thanks to my cosmetology license, I can share with you the professional pedicure steps I used to perform in a salon. This DIY Pedicure Routine can help you save money and achieve sparkling feet!
I started cosmetology school at 18, and by 19, I was working in a salon. While my specialty was hair, I also had numerous pedicure clients. I loved pampering them as I filed, massaged, and polished.
Below is a DIY Pedicure Routine perfect for the summer or any time of year. Doing it yourself can give you a pampered feeling without the hefty costs!
Supplies:
Foot basin
Epsom salt (optional)
Amopé Pedi Perfect™ electronic foot file
Moisturizer (Coconut Oil)
Polish (base coat, color, & top coat)
1. Fill the foot basin with warm water and optional Epsom salt to soak your feet and soften the skin.
2. Use the Amopé Pedi Perfect™ electronic foot file to gently remove dead skin and calluses from the bottoms of your feet.
3. Pat your feet dry and apply moisturizer, such as Coconut Oil, to keep your feet soft and hydrated.
4. Trim and file your nails, then apply a base coat, followed by your desired nail polish color, and finish with a top coat for a professional touch.
5. Allow your nails to dry completely before putting on shoes to prevent smudging.
6. Enjoy your at-home professional pedicure and show off your beautifully pampered feet!
Clean/Soak
Use a basin large enough for both feet. Fill it with warm soapy water and soak for 5-10 minutes. This will help soften the skin and nails, making it easier to clean and groom your feet.
After soaking, dry one foot at a time and proceed to clip, file, and buff the nails. Make sure to use proper tools such as nail clippers, a nail file, and a buffer to smooth out any rough edges.
For tougher calluses or dry skin, consider using an electronic foot file to gently remove dead skin. Remember to be gentle and not overdo it, as this can cause damage to your skin.
Lastly, don’t forget to buff the toenails to give them a nice shine. This step will help improve the overall appearance of your feet and keep them looking healthy.
Switch
Repeat the steps on the other foot. Push back cuticles and clean under toenails.
Trim Cuticle
Trimming excess cuticle and hangnails is an important part of nail care. Cuticles are the thin skin that surrounds the base of your nails, and keeping them trimmed helps to prevent infections and promotes healthy nail growth. Hangnails, on the other hand, are small pieces of torn skin that can be both painful and unsightly. To trim your cuticles and hangnails, gently push back the cuticles with a cuticle pusher, then use a sharp cuticle trimmer to carefully trim away any excess skin. Be sure to only trim the dead skin and avoid cutting into live tissue to prevent infections. Regularly trimming your cuticles and hangnails will help keep your nails looking neat and clean.
Exfoliate
Exfoliate with your preferred scrub. Rinse and dry your feet.
Smooth

Use the Amopé Pedi Perfect™ electronic foot file for smooth skin. Apply moisturizer.
Moisturize
Rinse your feet, dry, and moisturize up to the knees if desired.
Massage
Massage moisturizer into your feet. Remove any oils from your nails before polishing. It’s important to massage your feet regularly to improve circulation and relax tired muscles. Be sure to use a rich moisturizer to keep your skin soft and hydrated.
Polish
Polish with a Base Coat, 2 Color Coats, and Top Coat. Experiment with different colors or opt for white for a crisp look.

For nail polish preparation, Tattl recommends shaking the nail polish bottle in your hand to ensure a better consistency. Then apply a thin layer of nail polish. If you have shaky hands, you are not alone.
To seal in the color, finish with a quick-drying top coat such as the Good to Go Top Coat from Essie. Then carefully remove any accidental nail polish spots or mistakes with a cotton pad soaked in nail polish remover. After finishing and drying, you are free to admire your work.
Post-care is key to maintaining the longevity of your pedicure. For optimal results, use cuticle serum daily (try the Cuticle Serum from Olive & June) and periodically apply top coat to avoid chipping.
For a DIY pedicure, you will need: nail polish remover, cotton pads, nail clippers, nail file, foot scrub, lotion, liquid soap or bath soak, cuticle pusher or wooden stick, towel, base coat, nail polish in your chosen color, and top coat.
