Dryness can lead to hair damage, including split ends and frizz. Revitalize your locks with the right hair care products.
Restoring dry hair takes time, but the results are well worth the effort. Whether you have curly hair or bleached locks, follow our advice on treating dry hair.
Prevent Heat Damage
Heat styling can contribute to dryness and weaken hair structure. Lower temperatures and use heat protectants to minimize damage.
- Air Dry – Opt for air-drying methods to reduce heat exposure.
- Use Heat Protectants – Shield your hair from heat styling tools.
- Lower the Temperature – Reduce heat damage by adjusting temperature settings.
Lock in Moisture with Oils
Sebum, a natural oil, helps seal hair cuticles to retain moisture. Try using oil-based products like jojoba, argan, olive, or mineral oil to lock in hydration.
Intensive Moisture with Hair Masks
Treat your dry hair to nourishing hair masks for intense moisture. Consider using protein-rich treatments like our Overnight Perfector to strengthen and repair your hair.
Regular use of hair masks can help to improve the overall health and appearance of your hair. Look for masks that contain ingredients such as argan oil, coconut oil, or shea butter for added hydration. Applying a mask once a week can make a noticeable difference in the softness and shine of your locks.
In addition to using hair masks, it’s important to maintain a healthy hair care routine. This includes using a gentle shampoo and conditioner, avoiding heat styling tools as much as possible, and protecting your hair from environmental damage. With the right combination of products and practices, you can achieve strong, lustrous hair that looks and feels amazing.
Prevent Split Ends with Regular Haircuts
Trimming your hair regularly can help prevent split ends, a common issue associated with dryness. Schedule trims every four to seven weeks for healthier hair.
In addition to regular haircuts, there are other ways to prevent split ends. Avoid using heating tools such as flat irons and curling wands too often, as high heat can damage the hair cuticle and lead to split ends. Using a heat protectant spray before styling can help protect your hair from heat damage.
Another tip is to avoid over-brushing your hair, especially when it’s wet, as wet hair is more prone to breakage. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle your hair. Additionally, using a deep conditioning treatment once a week can help keep your hair moisturized and prevent split ends.
Cleansing and Moisturizing with Shampoo and Conditioner
Find a balance between cleansing and moisturizing your hair. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and oil-based conditioners to replenish moisture and maintain hydration.
- Avoid Sulfates – Choose sulfate-free shampoos to prevent dryness and frizziness.
- Use Oil-Based Conditioners – Look for conditioners containing coconut or argan oil for added moisture.
- Try Deep or Leave-In Conditioners – Use deep conditioning treatments for extra hydration.
For a more intensive repair, use a bond builder post-shower treatment to achieve instant softness and shine.
In addition to using sulfate-free shampoos and oil-based conditioners, it’s important to also protect your hair from heat damage. Consider using a heat protectant spray before using styling tools such as flat irons or curling wands.
Protect Your Hair from Damage

Minimize the impact of heat and excess washing on your hair. Reduce wash frequency, brush gently, try dry shampoo, and switch to silicone-free products to maintain hair health.
- Reduce Washing Frequency by One Wash per Week
- Gently Brush Hair
- Avoid Touching Hair Excessively
- Experiment with Dry Shampoo
- Transition to Silicone-Free Hair Products
Additionally, it’s important to use heat protectant products before using styling tools such as straighteners or curling irons. These products create a barrier between your hair and the heat, reducing the risk of damage.
Trimming your hair regularly can also help prevent split ends and breakage. Aim to get a trim every 6-8 weeks to keep your hair looking healthy and strong.
Tips for Color-Treated Hair
Coloring your hair can lead to dryness. Limit dye sessions, use color-safe products, rinse with cold water, and consider semi-permanent dyes to minimize hair damage.
Protect Your Hair from UV Damage
UV rays can contribute to dryness in hair. Safeguard your locks from the sun by wearing a hat or using UV protection products.
In addition to wearing a hat or using UV protection products, you can also protect your hair from UV damage by avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, which are typically between 10 am and 4 pm. Additionally, consider using a leave-in conditioner with SPF to provide extra protection for your hair.
Gentle Hair Care for Dryness
Handle your dry hair gently to prevent breakage. Use wide-tooth combs, gentle brushes, and detangler sprays to maintain hair health.
- Detangle Hair with a Wide-Tooth Comb
- Opt for Gentle Bristles when Brushing
- Use a Detangler Spray or Serum

Kailey has been working in the beauty and health industry as a digital writer and editor for over five years.
Sofia Emmanuel is a certified trichologist and licensed cosmetologist based in New York. She owns and manages the Crown Worthy beauty salon in the city.
Delving into details, upon arriving in New York in the Fall after college, my hair took a massive hit due to stress. Starting my first serious job, which was a source of anxiety even on good days – coupled with a change in weather affecting my skin condition – the situation exacerbated due to my first heartbreak, making it even more challenging.
For several months, I felt like a shadow of myself, and it was noticeable. Within a short span, my usually thick and healthy hair started thinning to the point where patches of scalp were visible, forcing me to style my hair strategically. Haircuts became my safety net, and I began consuming vitamins like candy.
Fast forward a few years from that fateful autumn, I can now proudly say that my hair is in a significantly better state. The lost hair has grown back almost 100%, thanks to the necessary psychological care, nutrition, and a consistent routine catering to my fragile hair. Additionally, my role as a beauty editor allowed me to discover incredible products and tools that not only excel in styling but also shield my hair effectively.
If hair health is vital to you – be it due to frequent heat styling, regular coloring, or excessive shedding from stress – keep reading. Here, I share insights on the routine and products that have made a significant difference in my hair, along with the opinions of renowned hair stylists, Angela Soto, and Alex Brown.

Key Changes in My Hair Care Routine
A pivotal change in my hair care routine has been dedicating time to exfoliate my scalp at least once a week. Consult any expert, and they will emphasize the significance of removing dead skin cells and impurities for your scalp to breathe and hair to grow healthily. Soto explains, “When dealing with fragile hair, it’s crucial to keep the scalp exfoliated to generate new skin cells on the scalp, oxygenate the roots, and hydrate hair to reduce susceptibility to breakage.”
Exploring Scalp Scrubs for Hair Health
Among the numerous options available, my recent favorite is the Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub advised by Soto, along with the entire Serene Scalp range. This unique cleansing formula is so gentle and contains particles fine enough that I never worry about them getting caught in my delicate strands. Just massage it gently in sections and let it work its magic. Packed with soothing ingredients like flower and watermelon extracts, and scalp-stimulating peppermint and caffeine oils, it deeply cleanses and nourishes simultaneously. I never thought a scalp scrub would become such a crucial part of my routine, but here we are. I’m a believer, and my hair thanks me.
Hydrate Your Hair with Oils
Another hair savior? Introducing more moisturizing agents. I own at least five hair oils on rotation, which I adore. The top two I turn to are the Gold Lust Oil from Oribe and the Intense Hydrating Oil from Pantene. I prefer applying them on damp hair, then a tad more once my hair is fully dry to tame flyaways and stray hairs. Both of these products work wonders.
Wondering why investing in the Gold Lust Oil from Oribe is worthwhile? According to Soto, it helps nurture fragile, breakage-prone hair without resorting to silicones. “A rich blend of argan, jasmine, and black currant penetrates the cuticle and gets absorbed into the cortex, restoring the hair over time with regular usage, smoothing and strengthening it from inside out,” she explains. “It contributes to the shine that dry, fragile hair craves,” she adds. Pro tip: one of Soto’s favorite ways to use this oil is to mix it into a mask and leave it overnight as a deep, leave-in moisturizer. (Yes, I tried it. And yes, it’s a game-changer).
Enhance Growth with Peptide Serums
I’ve been using the Multi-Peptide Density Serum from The Ordinary for several months now and noticed new growth in areas that were previously stagnant. However, I think I need to continue using it to see if the growth persists.
When it comes to shampoos and conditioners, I’m not very loyal, but I strictly adhere to super-moisturizing formulas that effectively combat breakage. For instance: when using moisturizing products consistently, I always notice a significant decrease in hair fall and an improvement in overall shine. Some of my preferred formulas include Olaplex No. 5 Bond Maintenance, Bumble and Bumble Super Rich, and Nexxus Keraphix Damage Repairing – trust me, you can’t go wrong with these.
Optimized Hair Care for Ultimate Health
For at least two years after realizing how much my hair needed gentle care, I stopped using hot tools. No dryers. No straighteners. Nothing. I washed my hair and let it air dry, that’s it. Then I saw Dyson released their famous Airwrap, claiming to style hair *without* excessive heat damage, and so – well, seeing how lackluster my hair once looked, I decided to give it a try.
After using this innovative styler only a few times, I was hooked. It made my hair shiny, smooth, and soft, and I noticed *no* breakage whatsoever. According to Brown, it’s the perfect option for fragile hair, as mentioned before, it doesn’t use excessively high temperatures. “The intelligent heat control of the Airwrap guarantees less breakage of your locks,” she explains emphatically. “It’s everything, and an excellent option for people with damaged or weak hair.”
So right after my shower, I follow these steps: after the usual brushing with Fine & Fragile Tangle Teezer brush, I apply a dab of Oribe’s golden oil to damp hair and let it air dry about 60 percent. Then I use the Airwrap, either its soft smoothing brush, designed for gentle scalp care, or the round volumizing brush, as it helps add volume to my thin hair. Additionally, when I feel more daring or just have a few extra minutes, I use the 1.6-inch barrels to create effortless loose waves. It takes me less than 10 minutes, and I love it.
Although I was never a fan of regular haircuts, a few recent sessions made me reconsider. Soto trimmed a couple of centimeters off my hair a few weeks ago, and they still look salon fresh. And before that, I visited Chuck Bass, and he carefully treated my split ends. It may seem like a small measure, but it refreshes your hair and instantly makes it appear thicker and healthier. In the future, I’ll be getting a trim every six weeks.
So as soon as I found out what exactly causes damaged hair and the signs to look out for in order to recognize when hair needs help, I tried some of these tips for repairing hair damage.
It is not necessary for most people to wash their hair daily. Washing too frequently can strip away natural oils and increase the risk of hair damage.
Avoid Rubbing Hair With a Towel

Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel after washing, try wrapping it in a microfiber towel or a T-shirt to prevent frizz and breakage. You can also let your hair air dry or use a blow dryer with heat protectant.
Use a Wide-Tooth Comb
Using a wide-tooth comb on wet or semi-dry hair can help prevent split ends and breakage, especially for those with curly hair. This is a gentle way to detangle hair and style damaged hair without causing further harm.
Try Heatless Styling
If your hair is dry and damaged, give it a break from heat styling tools to allow it to recover. Try heatless hairstyles and conditioning treatments to help repair your hair and improve its health.
Purchase a Silk Pillowcase
Sleeping on a silk pillowcase can benefit your hair and skin by reducing frizz and tangles. Silk pillowcases promote healthier hair and can help damaged hair heal and prevent future damage.
In addition, silk pillowcases are hypoallergenic and gentle on the skin, making them a great choice for those with sensitive skin or skin conditions such as eczema. The smooth surface of silk pillowcases also reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases, helping you maintain a youthful complexion.
When purchasing a silk pillowcase, be sure to look for high-quality silk with a high momme weight for durability and luxurious feel. Consider factors such as pillowcase size, color options, and care instructions before making your purchase to ensure you select the best silk pillowcase for your needs.
