DIY Acrylic Nails: Step-by-Step Guide

Choosing the Right Nail Tips

When selecting nail tips, make sure they fit your nails properly. You can trim and shape them to your desired length and style. It’s important to choose high-quality nail tips that are strong and durable.

Proper Mixing Technique

When mixing the liquid acrylic and acrylic powder, ensure that the consistency is smooth and free of lumps. Practice the correct ratio of liquid to powder to achieve a perfect acrylic mixture for application.

Mastering Nail Shaping

Shaping your nails properly is essential for a polished look. Use a nail file to shape and smooth the edges of your acrylic nails. You can opt for various nail shapes such as square, round, almond, or coffin, depending on your preference.

Maintaining Your Acrylic Nails

After applying acrylic nails, make sure to care for them properly to prolong their lifespan. Avoid using your nails as tools and be gentle when performing daily tasks. Moisturize your cuticles regularly and schedule infills to keep your acrylic nails looking fresh.

Look for a kit that contains basic acrylic nail supplies, such as a nail brush, acrylic liquid, and various acrylic powders (clear, pink, and white). Some kits may also include a glass container for the acrylic liquid, which is even more convenient.

The best nails to use with an acrylic set are nail tips. Most acrylic kits come with nail tips. The purpose of the acrylic liquid and powder is to adhere to your natural nail bed, and it’s easier with fake tips because you can adjust the nail length as you prefer.

To do acrylic nails at home, it’s essential to have the right supplies. Consider purchasing an acrylic nail kit, or buy the supplies separately. You’ll need acrylic nail tips, glue, clippers, files, acrylic liquid, powder, a mixing bowl, a brush, and possibly a training hand for practice. Start by cleaning your nails, shaping them, pushing back cuticles, and applying nail primer to remove any moisture and oil. Then, follow the steps for applying acrylic nails outlined in this article. Remember to let the acrylic dry for about 10 minutes before finishing with shaping and painting.

Before my professional training, I used to spend hours painting my nails at home, but they never looked as good as a salon manicure. I struggled with streaky polish around my nails and skin and wanted to learn how to apply nail polish neatly. Many of my clients who buy CND Vinylux from me requested a tutorial on applying it neatly at home.

Paint Your Nails Like A Pro

If you want to achieve a professional nail look at home, follow this simple technique. I’ve also included tips for cuticle work to achieve a polished finish.

Tools You Will Need

Perform A Manicure

Ensure your hands and nails are clean before starting. Use a 240 grit file to shape your nails, and clean off any nail dust. Soak your nails in warm, soapy water for 2 to 3 minutes before doing cuticle work. Remember to be gentle with your cuticles to avoid damaging the eponychium. Use an orange wood stick to gently remove the cuticles from your nail plate. Clean your nails with an acetone-based remover and avoid touching them with your hands or face after cleansing.

Paint Your Nails Like a Pro

Paint your nails like a professional by applying a thin base coat and capping the end of your nails. Keep the product off your skin by using a brush and apply the color coat in the same manner. Shake the polish before using it for a smooth application.

Unscrew the cap and wipe the brush stem on the bottle neck to remove excess polish before using. Apply the brush to the center of the nail, leaving a small gap near the cuticle. Paint slowly for better control. Repeat on each side of the nail, ensuring polish doesn’t touch the skin. Finish all nails with a second coat using the same method.

If polish gets on the skin, use a plastic-backed pad with acetone to clean it off. After the base coat, apply a bit more polish to the brush for the top coat. Keep the brush moist to avoid patches. Finish with cuticle oil and gently massage.

Whether you’re trying to save money or can’t make it to the salon, it’s never too late to learn how to do a manicure at home. Besides the satisfaction of doing it yourself, there are therapeutic benefits as well. However, getting salon-quality results at home can be challenging.

From chipping, smudging, to streaking, a lot can go wrong. But fear not, it’s possible to achieve a salon-quality manicure at home with a little practice and the right technique. Here is where we can help. We’ve asked famous manicurists to share their secrets on how to do a professional manicure, and it turns out it’s easier than we thought. Just 9 simple steps. Follow along for a manicure so good, people will ask for your salon’s address.

Step 1: Clean your nails with polish remover

To get a great manicure at home, follow the professionals’ lead by spending as much time prepping your nails as you do painting them. Start with a good nail polish remover, such as Sally Hansen’s, to quickly remove all polishes (even glitter) and provide essential nutrients to strengthen your nails and moisturize the cuticles. Make sure your nails are completely clean, any residue will make the polish less smooth. Even if you haven’t painted your nails, wipe each one with remover to remove oils and dirt that can ruin your polish. Don’t forget to wash your hands and dry them.

Step 2: Clip, file, and buff

Trim your nails if needed. Then file them in one direction to achieve square, round, or in-between shapes. Tenderly file from the edges to the center to avoid nail peeling. Consider using a glass or ceramic file for a gentler approach. Do you have thin nails? Try this tip from celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann: hold the file flat against the nail and tilt it slightly to file at a slight angle. Finally, gently buff the top and sides of the nails with a buffing block, not an emery board, to create a smooth surface. “If you don’t buff, natural oils in the nails can build up, leaving residues that can ruin your manicure,” says Rita Remark, Essie’s chief educator. “Nail buffing is the same as teeth cleaning – it refreshes, rejuvenates the nails, and removes ridges.”

After buffing, you can also apply a nail oil or cuticle cream to nourish and hydrate your nails and cuticles. This will help keep your nails healthy and strong. Don’t forget to moisturize your hands and nails regularly to prevent dryness and improve the overall appearance of your manicure.

Step 3: Push back your cuticles

Prepare your cuticles with a cuticle treatment (make sure it’s not oil or balm) to dissolve dead skin and soften the area. Contrary to popular belief, cuticle oils and cuticle treatments are not the same and cannot be used interchangeably. Oils moisturize while treatments act as exfoliants for your nail plate. Then gently push back the cuticles with a cuticle stick. We love these manicure sticks, which are also great for cleaning under the nails. Your cuticles protect your nails from bacteria and make them soft, so avoid cutting them.

Step 4: Exfoliate your hands

Exfoliate your hands, wrists, and forearms with a scrub that removes dead skin cells and replenishes moisture. Take your orange stick again to gently clean dirt from under the nails. Then wash your hands and thoroughly dry them.

Step 5: Moisturise your hands and cuticles

Moisturize now to prevent smudging almost dry polish later. An elegant, light alternative to hand cream, which is also ideal for moisturizing the cuticles, is rose hip seed oil from Mario Badescu, which Rita Remark, Essie’s chief educator, used for Gigi Hadid’s fancy manicure at the Met Gala. Take the opportunity to give yourself a hand massage – just because you’re not at a spa doesn’t mean you can’t relax for a minute. To finish, wipe each nail with a nail polish remover to remove residues.

Step 6: Apply a base coat

Apply a base coat for hydration, nail protection, and chip prevention. Then wait a little. Essie nail guru Weingarten, founder of Essie, recommends waiting two full minutes between each coat, starting with the base coat. Try Essie Here to Stay to lock in color and prevent nail staining.
